The UK’s Department of Science, Innovation and Technology is working on laws to control artificial intelligence (AI) models. Even though the UK held a major AI safety meeting and set up an AI Safety Institute to check the safety of these models, there are no firm rules stopping companies from releasing untested AI models or dealing with those found unsafe.
This contrasts with the European Union, which can fine companies that don’t meet safety standards. UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak suggests there’s no need to quickly introduce regulations. There’s also talk about changing copyright rules to give people more control over their data used in AI training. However, any new laws are not ready yet and could take some time to finalize.
