Quantum dots (QDs) are tiny semiconductor crystals with unique light and electrical properties, discovered in 1980. They’re now a hot topic in technology, especially for displays. Initially, they were used “on edge” between LED rows but faced limitations. Quantum dot enhancement film (QDEF) emerged in 2013, becoming the top QD product. QDEF is easy to use, fits various displays, and doesn’t require major assembly changes.

Meanwhile, quantum dot on glass (QDOG) didn’t take off due to cost and complexity. Quantum dot color converters (QDCC) are gaining traction, with applications in OLED and micro-LED displays. New ideas like “QD on Chip” and QLED displays are also in the mix. Overall, QDs hold huge potential for future display technologies, with the market projected to hit $550 million by 2034.
